The Lead Educator will assist 30 children aged 5-8 identified as requiring targeted support, and work with them, parents, carers and guardians for 1.5 hours weekly x 2 sessions a week across 1 year through bespoke, tailored literacy and numeracy support.
Alongside the lead educator, trained UNLH literacy/numeracy volunteers will deliver creative learning approaches in the Upper Norwood Library Hub in partnership with parents, carers and guardians to directly support the academic achievement of pupils to help close the attainment gap and build a joy of reading through our library partnership.
Underpinning sessions, a key element is signposting and supporting parents, carers and guardians to access vital support services to help move forward towards financial self-sufficiency.
Key responsibilities:
- Devise and deliver a scheme of work that meet the objectives of the literacy and numeracy programme
- Prepare schemes of work, create appropriate resources and session plans ensuring that creative, flexible and adaptable learning is provided within sessions at all times that supports children to improve their literacy and numeracy skills
- Demonstrate the ability to remove barriers for parents
- Be responsible for the preparation and development of teaching materials to support children and their parents to learn together
- Be accountable for the progress and outcomes of children on the programme
- Be aware of capabilities, prior knowledge and differentiate appropriately to build on these, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of how the children learn
- Have a clear understanding of the needs of all children, including those with special educational needs, EAL, disabilities and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of appropriate teaching strategies
- Use an appropriate range of lesson observations, monitoring and recording strategies as a basis for setting goals and learning objectives that stretch and challenge children
- Be accountable for the progress and outcomes of the children and monitor progress
- Give children and parents regular feedback
- Provide opportunities within the sessions to link with the Upper Norwood Library Community Connector to enable parents to connect with local support services and services offered within the Library Hub e.g. Big Energy Saving Network, ESOL classes, digital inclusion classes
- Provide regular opportunities to encourage children and parents to build a joy of reading and join the library service (if not members)
- Be a positive role model and demonstrate consistently positive attitudes, values and behaviours
- Lead training for up to 10 literacy and numeracy volunteers to build skills required to support children and parents in the class
- Be responsible for supporting volunteers during sessions to provide the best support for children to meet their individual learning needs
- Give regular feedback to volunteers to empower them to continue delivering a quality service throughout the project
- Be responsible for safeguarding, raising any concerns with the Designated Safeguarding Lead
