SGN are upgrading the gas network in Norwood Road.
The project involves the essential replacement of old metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure they continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply to the local area.
This safety-critical project needs to go ahead now, rather than wait until the coronavirus pandemic passes, to ensure the local community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.
The project started on Monday 11 January and SGN expects it to last approximately 11 weeks. Their engineers will be replacing the network as follows:
Phase one – lasting approximately 10 days
• Engineers will be working in Norwood Road at the junction of Ullswater Road.
• For everyone’s safety they will need to close Ullswater Road and the footpath at this junction.
• Motorists will be diverted via York Hill and Harpenden Road.
• Pedestrians will be diverted via Ullswater Road and Harpenden Road.
• Businesses and resident access will be maintained. Access to the West Norwood Funeralcare on Ullswater Road will also be maintained at all times.
• Bus Stop H (Elmcourt Road Tulse Hill) will be suspended at this location.
Phase two – lasting approximately 2 weeks
• Their engineers will be continue working in Norwood Road at the junction of Ullswater Road.
• Ullswater Road and the footpath will remain closed around the work area, with signed diversions in place.
• To complete the work as quickly as possible they will also be working in Norwood Road at the junction with York Hill and Lancaster Avenue.
• They will need to install temporary multi-way traffic lights at this junction, to access the gas pipe safely.
• Access for businesses, residents and West Norwood Funeralcare will continue to be maintained. However, Bus Stop H (Elmcourt Road Tulse Hill) will still be suspended at this location.
Phase three – lasting approximately 3 weeks
• Engineers we will be working in Norwood Road between Ullswater Road and Elmcourt Road.
• To access the gas pipe safely they will be working in the footpath between these junctions. However, pedestrian access will be maintained and the footpath into Ullswater Road will be reopened.
• For everyone’s continued safety Ullswater Road will remained closed and a signed diversion in place.
• They will also need to suspend some parking bays Harpenden Road to maintain traffic flow.
Phase four – lasting approximately 5 weeks
• For the final phase, engineers we will be working in Norwood Road at the junctions with Harpenden Road and Elmcourt Road.
• Traffic flow will continue to be maintained as normal along Norwood Road, however, they will need to suspend some parking bays opposite Elmcourt Road.
• For everyone’s continued safety Ullswater Road will remained closed and a signed diversion in place.
• Access to the West Norwood Funeralcare on Ullswater Road will also be maintained at all times.
They’re working closely with the UK Government and public health bodies to make sure they work in line with expert advice during the pandemic. They have extra safety precautions in place to protect both colleagues and communities from catching or spreading the virus as they carry out our safety-critical project. SGN understands that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, local residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
